What is Baked Chicken Parmesan?
Baked Chicken Parmesan also called Chicken parm is a healthy and quick Italian American dish. It is one of the healthy versions of the classic fried Chicken Parmesan version. The seasoned chicken breast is usually breaded, baked, and topped with flavor-loaded marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese. Then the chicken is baked again until the cheese is melted.
Even though the fried version is the classic way to make parmesan chicken, you can achieve similar crispiness and deliciousness in the oven as well. Another important fact is though the recipe sounds Italian, it is purely an American dish adapted from the classic Italian Eggplant Parmesan. And you may find the chicken version exists only in Italian American restaurants and it is also considered not authentic Italian food.
However, who doesn't love the crispy Parmesan Breaded Chicken cutlet topped with flavorful marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese for the sake of its not authentic? It is okay, as far as it tastes delicious and keeps your tummy happy. After all, cooking is an evolution of creativity!
Ingredients
The ingredients you will need to make this Baked Chicken Parmesan are basic Italian pantry elements and you may find them easily in most grocery stores around. So let's see what are they below.
For Sauce
Following are the ingredients you will need to make the sauce.
- Tomato - Tomato puree, sauce, or diced tomatoes work well for this recipe. For a flavor-filled sauce, I recommend using the diced tomatoes
- Onion and Garlic - Deliver fresh aroma, taste, and flavor
- Dried Italian Herbs - You could use fresh or dried basil leaves or a mix of all dried Italian herbs
- Basic Seasonings - Chiliflakes, black pepper for a slight heat
- Oil - Olive oil, canola oil, or vegetable oil. I personally prefer extra virgin light-tasting olive oil for this sauce
For Breading
Following are the ingredients you will need for breading the chicken.
- Chicken Breast - I have used 2 medium-sized skinless and boneless chicken breast that is thinly sliced
- Flour - All-purpose flour and corn starch for the flour coating
- Panko Bread Crumb - Gives a nice crunchy outer covering
- Parmesan Cheese - For a cheesy and crispy outer coating
- Basic Seasoning - Oregano, chili flakes, and black pepper
- Mozzarella Cheese - For the topping

How to make Baked Chicken Parmesan in Oven?
The recipe I have shared here is the healthy Oven Baked Chicken Parmesan that requires no frying. This classic dish is made a bit healthier without oil frying the breaded chicken cutlets. Instead, it is baked in the oven to perfection and the high-temperature oven delivers the crispy exterior and juicy insides.
Following are the high-level instructions to make this recipe but for detailed step-by-step instructions with photos and video, please check out the recipe card below.
To make Sauce
- Saute -The first step is to make Marinara Sauce, so to do that, in a pan with medium heat, pour oil, and add onion and garlic. Saute until it turns aromatic
- Cook - Add the diced tomato and give it a good mix, Allow it to cook for 5 to 7 minutes
- Mash - Mash the tomatoes using a potato masher until it turns soft and mushy
- Simmer - Simmer the heat and see it with chili flakes, black pepper powder, basil leaves, and salt. Allow the mixture to cook for 2 to 3 minutes
- Remove - Remove the sauce from the heat and reserve it for later use
Bread the Chicken
- Season - Season the sliced chicken breast with garlic powder, salt, and pepper powder, and set aside
- Beat the Eggs - In a glass bowl, crack the eggs, and salt and give it a good mix until it turns frothy
- Combine - In a shallow tray, add all-purpose flour, cornstarch, panko, parmesan cheese, onion powder, pepper powder, oregano, and salt. Combine everything well
- Dredge - Now dip the seasoned chicken breast in the egg mixture and then dredge it in the breading mixture. Makes sure to coat the chicken breast nicely in the breading mixture. Repeat the same for the rest of all breasts
To make Baked Chicken Parmesan
- Arrange - Now Place the breaded chicken breast on an oil-greased baking tray. You can also oil spray the chicken breast to avoid the chalky flour layer and it is completely optional
- Bake - Bake it in the preheated oven at 425°F for about 25 to 30 minutes or until it turns golden
- Remove and add toppings - Remove the crispy baked Chicken Breast from the oven and top it with a generous amount of marinara sauce that we prepared in the earlier step. Finally, top the sauce with mozzarella cheese, and basil leaves
- Bake again - Bake the chicken breast in the oven again for 5 to 10 minutes or until the cheese melts

Tips
- Breading - Breading the chicken breast with all-purpose flour, cornstarch, panko, and parmesan cheese delivers the crispy exterior. I would also dip the seasoned chicken breast in beaten eggs before breading. This will help to hold the breading mixture intact. You could also dip the breast in buttermilk if the eggs are not on your preferred ingredient list
- Baking Temperature - I baked the chicken at 425°F for about 25 to 30 minutes until the outer layer is crisp and golden. The chicken is baked again with cheese at the same temperature for 5 to 10 minutes until the cheese is melted. But you can choose the temperature between the range 400°F to 450°F and the cooking time may vary depending on the size and thickness of the breast
- Chalky Flour - Feel free to spray some cooking oil over the breaded chicken to avoid the chalky flour layer after it is baked. This step is optional, you can feel free to do it or skip it
- Seasoning - Seasoning the chicken and breading mixture with suggested spices and seasoning powders helps to deliver the best flavor to your chicken parmesan, so I recommend not compromising on it
How long to bake Chicken Parm in the oven?
I have used thinly sliced chicken breast here, so it took 25 to 30 minutes to cook in a preheated oven at 425°F. The cooking time may vary if you are using a full chicken breast and it also really depends on the size and thickness of the breast. Whatever may be the temperature setting I always recommend checking the internal temperature of the chicken to be 165°F as suggested by the FDA.
Storage Suggestions
This Baked Chicken Parmesan tastes great when served warm as soon as it is prepared. But you can bake the breaded chicken breast in the oven ahead of time and store it in the freezer for up to a month. When you are planning to serve it, top it with sauce and cheese. Bake it in the preheated oven at 425°F for about 20 to 25 or until the cheese bubbles and turns golden brown.
Serving Suggestions
This Healthy Baked Chicken Parmesan tastes great over pasta, salads, roasted vegetables like roasted broccoli, roasted potatoes, roasted asparagus, roasted cauliflower, roasted carrots, or roasted green beans as a side dish.
