What is Jasmine Rice?
Jasmine Rice is a long-grain rice that has a pandan-like aroma and floral fragrance. It is usually grown in Thailand and is one of the staple rice in Asian cuisine. The rice tends to be soft and slightly sticky after cooking and it can be perfectly made into fluffier using a correct rice-water ratio.
This Jasmine Rice is one of the best rice recipes and side dishes to pair up with most Asian stir-fries and curries due to its unique aroma and taste. Similar to basmati rice, jasmine rice also falls under the aromatic rice category due to its floral and pandan-like aroma.
Cooking the perfect Jasmine rice depends majorly on the rice-water ratio. The rice may turn super sticky if the rice-water ratio goes wrong. Since this rice is naturally plumper and softer, it may turn mushy and sticky if the water ratio is high or the cooking time is not followed properly.
So this recipe shared here shows you how to make perfectly fluffier Jasmine rice on a stovetop. I hope the detailed instructions would help you to make the perfect meal even if you are a beginner at cooking. I have also shared some basic tips and ideas in the section below to make the cooking process easier

How to Cook Jasmine Rice?
The recipe I have shared here is how to cook Jasmin Rice on the stovetop using the absorption method. It is one of the easy methods to make perfectly fluffy and fragrant rice every time and just in under 30 minutes.
Following are the high-level instructions to make this recipe but for detailed step-by-step instructions with photos and video, please check out the recipe card below.
- Rinse the rice - Wash the Jasmine rice in water 2 to 3 times or until the water runs clear. It is one of the basic steps to clean dust, and debris from your rice. And reserve it for later use
- Bring Water to Boil - Now in a medium saucepan or pot, add 2¼ cups of water and bring it to a boil (Here I have used a 1:1½ cups of rice to water ratio to achieve soft and fluffy rice. But you can also adjust based on your preference and more info at tips section)
- Add the Rice - Once the water comes to a boil, add the rinsed jasmine rice and give it a good spread using a spoon or spatula
- Boil the rice - Let the rice boil until the center and sides of the rice bubble and creates a foamy texture. Please refer to the image below in the recipe card
- Simmer and cook - Now reduce the heat to low and close the pan with its lid and cook for about 15 minutes or until all the water absorbed
- Rest the rice - Switch off the heat and allow it to rest for 5 to 10 minutes. Now open the lid and fluff the rice with a fork
- Fluff and Serve - Now the fluffy rice is ready for you to serve. Serve this Fragrant Jasmine rice with your favorite curries, stir-fried dishes, or roasted and baked vegetables
Jasmine Rice to Water Ratio
The Perfect Rice water ratio for cooking Jasmine rice is 1:1½ cups which helps to deliver soft and fluffy rice. It gives the perfect texture to soak your rice in your favorite veg or non-veg curries. However, I would recommend reducing the ratio to 1:1¼ cups for achieving tender and al dente rice. And it works great for making fried rice, chicken fried rice or for preparing one-pot meals.
Basmati Vs Jasmine Rice
Both rice varieties are long-grain and have a unique aroma and fragrance. But there are many differences when you compare both the rice. For instance, Basmati rice is a rice variety that has origins in India and Pakistan and they are thin and extra long. They also have a nuttier-like taste along with a pandan-like aroma.
While Jasmine rice is grown in Thailand and they are also long grain, but they are not thin like Basmati instead they are wider and high in moisture. Jasmine rice also has a pandan-like aroma and it is mostly of floral fragrance.
Tips
- Rinse your rice - This is the first and foremost basic step while preparing any kind of rice dish. Rinsing the rice helps to remove unwanted dust and debris from it and also helps to remove excessive amounts of starch
- Use a good pot or saucepan -Always make sure to use the correct pot or saucepan that got a tight lid. It is really important especially when you are cooking rice using the absorption method on the stovetop. It helps to cook the rice evenly and seals the steam inside to make the cooking process effective
- Rice Water Ratio - As I mentioned above I would recommend 1:1½ cups for serving along with curries. But if you are planning the rice for fried rice or one-pot meals then I suggest reducing it to 1:1¼ cups for al dente rice
- Should you season with salt - I usually don't use salt to cook rice, as I serve it with curries and stir-fries that already have a good amount of salt. So it is completely your personal choice to season it with salt or skip
Storage Suggestions
You could store your cooked Jasmine rice for about 2 to 3 days in an airtight closed container in the refrigerator. Also, it freezes well in the freezer for up to 3 months. If you are planning to freeze it, then store it flat in the Ziploc bags.
Usually, frozen rice does not require thawing, so feel free to reheat it in the microwave until it is heated evenly. Make sure to sprinkle 2 to 3 tbsp of water while reheating to make it fluffier again.
Serving Suggestions
Serve this aromatic and fluffy rice with your favorite curries, stir fry dishes or roasted and baked dishes. To make a perfect Thai platter, serve it with Thai yellow curry, Thai red curry, Thai green curry, or Panang curry.
You can also serve it along with Indian curries like chicken curry, butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, lamb vindaloo, Rogan josh, and similar other curries of your choice.
