How to Cook or Roast Whole Chicken in Oven?
The recipe I have shared here is a juicy Roasted Whole Chicken in the oven. This whole chicken recipe is made with a simple seasoning marinade that can be easily customizable.
Following are the high-level instructions to make this recipe but for detailed step-by-step instructions with photos and video, please check out the recipe card below.
- Add - Add ginger, garlic, onion, pepper powder, chili powder, and salt to a bowl. Give it a good mix
- Combine - Add 1 tbsp of lemon juice and 2 tbsp of oil and mix well until everything gets incorporated. Now the marinade for roasting the chicken is ready
- Slit the chicken - Now take the cleaned whole chicken and make a slit near the breasts and legs using a sharp knife. Doing this way helps the chicken to absorb the marinade well
- Season - Add a generous amount of marinade all over the chicken and rub it well
- Insert the aromatics - Add 2 sprigs of mint leaves, garlic, and lemon wedges inside the cavity of the chicken. Using a small twine tie the legs of the chicken
- Transfer - Now place the seasoned whole chicken in an oil-greased baking tray
- Bake and Roast - Place it in a preheated oven at 375° F and bake the chicken for 1 hour and 20 minutes. I would also recommend basting the chicken every 20 minutes which delivers excellent taste and flavor. And I would also suggest switching the baking mode to broil and roasting the chicken for the last 5 to 7 minutes. This helps the skin to nicely crisp up
- Remove and Serve - Now remove the Roasted Chicken from the oven and it is ready for you to taste and enjoy

- Temperature - Oven temperature plays another important role in achieving a juicy and crispy chicken, so I have shared detailed tips on this in the below post section

How long to Roast a Whole Chicken?
The Roasting time may vary depending upon the size of the chicken. But the 4 lb chicken that I used took 1 hr and 20 minutes to cook thoroughly. Also, the roasting time varies depending on the temperature setting you prefer to choose. Whatever the temperature setting, always make sure to check the internal temperature based on FDA guidelines. And they suggest the safe internal temperature for poultry is 165°F.
Temperature for Roasting Chicken
Temperature plays an important factor in achieving a perfectly juicy and crispy Roast Chicken. Here I have used 4 lb whole chicken and I have roasted it at 370°F preheated oven for 1 hr and 20 minutes. And I have switched the baking mode to broil for the last 5 to 7 minutes to achieve a crispy exterior.
However, some people prefer to bake at 370°F for the first 30 minutes and increase the temperature to 400°F for the remaining time to achieve a similar crispy exterior. But the roasting method that I followed gave me a juicy and crispy chicken with a good amount of pan juice which I served alongside.
Storage Suggestions
This Roasted Chicken tastes great and juicy when served warm as soon as it is prepared. But you can store the chicken in the refrigerator for up to 2 days in an airtight container. You can also freeze it in the freezer for up to a month. But make sure to strip the meat and discard the bones before storing them.
Serving Suggestions
Serve this crispy and juicy roasted whole chicken with roasted green beans, roasted broccoli, roasted carrots, roasted asparagus, roasted cauliflower, roasted potatoes, rice, salads, or other sides of your choice
