What is Whipped Coffee?
Whipped coffee is a delicious frothy coffee drink made with instant coffee, water, and sugar. It is typically whipped until creamy and fluffy and then served over hot or cold milk. Even though the recipe is well known in the name of beaten coffee, Frappe, Batido, frothy coffee, and cloud coffee in many countries, it became popular during the covid pandemic as Dalgona Coffee.
Dalgona Coffee became a trend in South Korea during the social distancing and then spread all over the world. The term Dalgona refers to a sugar candy that looks similar to the fluffy whipped coffee and hence the name.
This drink is super easy to make and an absolute treat to relish at any time of the day. You can make it with a hand whisk, electric beater, or a stand mixer. And all you need is under 15 minutes to make this delicious drink.
Ingredients
- Instant Coffee Powder - It gives the best fluffy coffee drink and makes frothy and creamy coffee. Note ground coffee powder or previously ground coffee bags does not work for this recipe
- White Sugar - I have used white sugar for whipping, but you can also use raw, brown or coocnut sugar
- Hot Water - Hot water makes the whipping process faster compared to cold water, so I suggest the same to save some time
- Milk - I have used cold whole cow milk and you can use Almond Milk, Oat Milk , or cashew milk for vegan versions. And you can also use hot milk if you really love make hot version
How to make Whipped Coffee?
To make the drink, add instant coffee powder, sugar, and hot water to a wide bowl. Start whipping the ingredients with the electric hand beater at medium speed until they form stiff peaks.
The mixture usually turns to a pale, creamy, and fluffy texture after 7 to 10 minutes. That's it! Now the delicious whipped coffee is ready for you to serve over milk.
Now pour the chill or hot milk into a glass and spread some whipped coffee over it. Serve this delicious treat with a straw and mix before relishing the drink.
Tips
- I have used instant coffee granules to make this whipped coffee and you can also use instant coffee powder which gives the same results
- You can also use instant espresso which gives the same fluffiness but the flavor will be too strong compared to instant coffee powder
- Using warm water or hot water helps the coffee to whip faster than cold water, so I recommend the same to save some time
- I have used white sugar for whipping the coffee and you can also use brown sugar, raw sugar, or coconut sugar for similar results. And sugar helps to stabilize the foam and helps in achieving a nice fluffiest coffee. It also helps the cream to stay in the same state for long hours
- Always use the equal parts of instant coffee, sugar and hot water which helps to gives the perfect fluffiness and creamy texture. If you really want your drink to be sweet then then feel free to add the sweet to your milk
- Eventhough electric hand beater makes the whipping process faster you can also use hand whisk to make this drink. But I would not recommend spoon or fork to whisk as it would tire your arms and take a lot of time
- Always use a wide bowl which helps the air to circulate in all the directions to whip properly and small containers or mugs will make the process longer
- You can serve this whipped coffee also called dalgona coffee over cold or hot milk for morning breakfast, mid-day drink, or evening snack
Variations
- You can add 1 tsp of cocoa powder along with other ingredients while whipping to make cocoa coffee flavor
- Top with chocolate shavings, nuts, crushed cookies for more different flavors
- You can also sprinkle cinnamon powder, cocoa powder or chocolate powder before serving the drink
Storage Suggestions
This whipped coffee stays good in the refrigerator for up to a week and stores up to a month in the freezer in a closed air-tight container. You can make this cream in bulk and use it whenever you like to sip this decadent treat with milk.
Serving Suggestions
Serve this coffee over hot or cold milk and mix gently before you enjoy it. It can also be served over almond or cashew milk for a vegan-friendly version. And it makes a perfect drink for your morning coffee or any time of your day.
