    • Chicken Tenders or Chicken Breast Strips: Chicken tenders are naturally tender and cook quickly. If you don’t have them, just slice chicken breasts into strips for a similar result.
    • Panko Bread Crumbs: These airy breadcrumbs give the tenders an amazing crunch and make them extra crispy.
    • All-Purpose Flour: This helps the coating stick nicely to the chicken, making them perfectly crispy.
    • Beaten Egg: The egg helps the breading stay on the chicken and adds some moisture for extra flavor.
    • Hot Sauce: I like to experiment with different hot sauces depending on the day for just the right kick. You can use your favorite hot sauce and adjust the amount to match your spice preference.
    • Yellow Mustard: This adds a nice tangy flavor to balance the seasonings.
    • Seasonings: Garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper add a lot of flavor. Garlic gives a little kick, onion adds a slight sweetness, and black pepper gives a bit of heat.
    • Dried Parsley: It brings a mild herbal flavor, but you can swap it with other herbs if you prefer.
    • Oil for Frying: I recommend using vegetable, sunflower, canola, or peanut oil since they fry the chicken nicely without affecting the taste.

    • Add beaten eggs, hot sauce, yellow mustard, and all-purpose flour to the seasoning mix. Stir well to create a smooth marinade.
      A bowl with marinade.

    Frying the Chicken Tenders

    • Fill a frying pan with enough oil for frying, and heat it to 365-375°F (185-190°C). To check if the oil is ready, drop in a small piece of bread—it should sizzle and turn brown quickly. Gently add the breaded chicken tenders to the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan.

    • Fry the tenders for 5 to 7 minutes on one side, then carefully flip them over. Fry for another 5 to 7 minutes, or until they’re fully cooked and golden-brown.

    Chef's Notes and Tips

Here are some key tips to perfect your Fried Chicken Tenders:
    • Marinating Time: For the best flavor and tenderness, marinate the chicken for at least 15 minutes. If you have extra time, marinating for a few hours or overnight in the fridge will give an even deeper flavor.
    • Proper Coating: To get that crispy outer layer, gently press the breading mixture onto the chicken and shake off any excess flour. Excess flour can cause the coating to burn.
    • Let the Chicken Rest Before Frying: After breading the tenders, let them sit for 10-15 minutes before frying. This helps the breading adhere better to the chicken, reducing the chances of it falling off during frying.
    • Oil Temperature: Keep the frying oil between 365°F to 375°F (185°C to 190°C). If the oil is too hot, the tenders may brown too quickly but stay undercooked inside; too cool, and they might absorb excess oil and turn greasy.
    • Avoid Overcrowding: Fry the tenders in batches, leaving space between each one. Overcrowding the pan can lower the oil temperature and result in uneven frying.
    • Drain Excess Oil: After frying, place the tenders on a paper towel-lined plate or a wire rack to drain. This keeps them from getting greasy and helps them stay crispy.
    • Check for Doneness: Make sure the chicken is fully cooked by using a meat thermometer; the internal temperature should reach 165°F (74°C) as recommended by the FDA. Alternatively, you can cut into a tender to check that it's fully cooked and no longer pink inside.
    • Double Breading for Extra Crunch: If you love extra crispy tenders, try double breading. After coating the chicken in the breading mixture the first time, dip it back into the egg mixture and coat again with the breading. This creates a thicker, crunchier outer layer.
    • Experiment with Seasonings: Feel free to adjust the seasonings to suit your taste. You can add a pinch of cayenne for extra heat, or even a bit of parmesan cheese to the breading for added flavor.
    • Air Fryer Option: For a healthier version, try using an air fryer. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) and cook the tenders for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through. They’ll still come out crispy, but with less oil.
    • Use Buttermilk for Marinating: If you want to add an extra layer of flavor and tenderness, try marinating the chicken in buttermilk instead of just spices. The acidity in the buttermilk helps tenderize the chicken while adding a subtle tangy flavor.

    Serving Suggestions

This Fried Chicken Tenders recipe can be enjoyed as a simple snack or paired for a complete meal. Here are a few recommendations to enjoy alongside the chicken:

    • Dipping Sauces: Take your tenders to the next level with a variety of sauces. Try honey mustard, aioli, tartar sauce, garlic parmesan, BBQ, mango chutney, ranch, or buffalo sauce for different flavor twists.
    • French Fries or Potato Wedges: Pair the tenders with crunchy French fries or seasoned potato wedges for that classic combo everyone loves.
    • Mac and Cheese: A comforting, cheesy side dish like mac and cheese pairs beautifully with the crispy chicken tenders. It’s a kid-friendly option that adults love too!
    • Salads: Keep it light with a refreshing side salad. Go for fresh coleslaw, a crisp cucumber salad, or a garden salad with vinaigrette for a refreshing contrast.
    • Vegetable Sides: Balance your meal with grilled or roasted veggies like green beans, carrots, broccoli, or corn. It adds a healthy touch to your plate.
    • Mashed Potatoes and Gravy: For a classic comfort food pairing, serve your chicken tenders with creamy mashed potatoes and gravy. It’s hearty and satisfying.
    • Pasta Dishes: Enjoy a side of creamy alfredo or garlic parmesan pasta. The rich, cheesy flavors perfectly complement the crispy chicken tenders.
    • Rice Pilaf or Quinoa: For a lighter, more wholesome option, serve the tenders alongside a flavorful rice pilaf or a quinoa salad. These add a nutritious element while still complementing the dish.

    Storage Suggestions

For the best taste and crunch, I always recommend enjoying Fried Chicken Tenders fresh. They’re at their crispiest and most flavorful right after cooking. But if you have leftovers or want to make extra, here’s how to store them and keep that delicious texture as much as possible:

    • Cooling: It’s important to let the tenders cool down to room temperature before storing. This helps avoid moisture buildup, which can make them soggy when reheating.
    • Refrigeration: Once cooled, place the tenders in an airtight container or resealable bag. To keep them from sticking together, separate each layer with parchment or wax paper. They’ll stay fresh in the fridge for 3-4 days, perfect for a quick lunch or snack the next day.
    • Reheating: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and warm the tenders for 10-15 minutes. This way, they get crispy again without drying out, and you can enjoy them just like when they were freshly made.
    • Freezing for Long-Term Storage: If you want to store them for longer, you can freeze the cooled tenders. Use a freezer-safe container or bag, and they’ll last up to 2-3 months. Freezing them in small batches is helpful if you only want to reheat a few at a time.
    • Thawing and Reheating Frozen Tenders: For the best results, thaw the frozen tenders in the refrigerator overnight. Then, reheat them in the oven as mentioned above. This slow thawing helps preserve their texture.
    • Safety Tip: Always use your senses—if the tenders smell, taste, or feel off, it’s safer to discard them. It’s better to be cautious and enjoy them fresh.
