Chicken Parmesan also called Chicken Parmigiana is a classical Italian-American dish. It is one of the versions of authentic Eggplant Parmesan where the breaded chicken is used instead of eggplant.
The breaded chicken breast is usually topped with marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese and then baked in a high-temperature oven. This Chicken Parmigiana is one of the popular dishes across the globe for its crispy and cheesy flavor and taste. Parmigiana is nothing but a dish made with Parmesan Cheese and this chicken dish is also called Chicken Parm, Chicken Parmi, or Parma.
This Chicken Parmesan is usually served as a main course on its own or over pasta. The breaded chicken parmesan cutlet is also often used in sandwiches in some restaurants in America. So without further delay, let's make this Chicken Parmesan at home.
Ingredients
The ingredients you will need to make this Chicken Parmesan or Parmigiana are basic pantry things and you may find them easily in supermarkets around. So let's see what you will need to make this dish below.
For Tomato Sauce
I have listed the ingredients for the basic and easy marinara sauce here but you can also check out my Pasta Sauce that has been posted already here in this blog.
- Tomato Puree - I have used store-brought tomato puree here and you can also use homemade crushed tomatoes for similar results
- Garlic and Onion - Freshly minced garlic and onion give the best flavor and taste to your sauce
- Italian Seasonings - Basil, parsley, oregano, chili flakes, pepper powder, and garlic powder for fresh aroma and taste
For Breading the Chicken
- Chicken Breast - I have used 2 large chicken breast that is halved and you can also use skinless chicken thighs
- Flour - All-purpose flour and corn starch for the flour coating
- Panko Bread Crumb - Gives a nice crunchy outer covering
- Parmesan Cheese - For a cheesy and crispy outer coating
- Italian Seasoning - You will need them for this step as well
- Mozzarella Cheese - For the topping
How to make Chicken Parmesan?
The recipe here I have shared is the classic Chicken Parmesan made with a homemade marinara sauce and a perfect crumb coating for a crispy chicken. Making this Chicken Parmigiana involves 4 main steps but don't intimidate by the lengthy process as the results are scrumptious.

To Make Tomato Sauce
- In a pan with medium heat, pour olive oil and add garlic. Saute until it turns aromatic
- Add in the onion and saute until it turns soft
- Now add the tomato puree and add dried oregano, basil, parsley, chili flakes, and salt, and give a good mix
- Simmer the heat and close the pan with its lid. Allow the sauce to cook for about 5 to 7 minutes
- Open the lid and now the tomato sauce is ready. Reserve it for later use
To Bread the Chicken
- Place the chicken breast in a tray and season them with garlic powder, pepper powder, and salt. Make sure to rub the seasoning on both the sides
- Now in a bowl, crack open 2 eggs and add salt. Whisk until it turns frothy and keeps it aside for later use
- In a tray, add all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, and Italian seasonings and give it a good mix. Reserve it for later use
- In another tray add panko bread crumbs, and parmesan cheese and mix well
- Now take the seasoned chicken breast and coat it well in the flour mixture. Make sure to tap off the excess flour
- Dip the flour-coated chicken breast in the egg mixture
- Now coat the chicken breast into a bread crumb parmesan mixture. And now the chicken cutlet is ready for you to fry in oil
To Fry the Chicken
- In a pan with medium heat, pour oil and add the breaded chicken breast
- Fry them for about 4 to 5 minutes or until it turns crispy and golden on both the sides
- Remove the chicken from the oil and it is ready for topping
To Make Chicken Parmesan
- Place the fried chicken breast on an oil-greased baking sheet and spread the prepared tomato sauce on each chicken cutlet
- Top it with mozzarella cheese, Italian seasoning mix, and finally with parmesan cheese
- Now bake the chicken in the preheated oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 15 to 20 minutes or until the cheese turns golden
- Remove the Chicken Parmesan also called Chicken Parmigiana from the oven and garnish with fresh parsley leaves
- Serve this Crispy Chicken Parmesan over your favorite pasta or enjoy it with roasted broccoli, Roasted Beans, or other sides of your choice

- Breading - Breading the chicken with flour, egg, bread crumbs, and cheese gives the perfect crispy chicken, so I recommend not compromising on the process
- Italian Seasoning - Adding fresh or dried Italian seasoning gives the authentic and fresh flavor to the dish
- Tomato or pasta Sauce - I have made the tomato sauce from scratch here but you can also use store-bought spaghetti, tomato to pasta sauce for this dish
- Baking Temperature - Bake the fried chicken breast topped with sauce and cheese at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 15 to 20 minutes or until the cheese turns golden
- Air Fryer - Even though I have made this dish on the stovetop you can also make it in the air fryer for similar results
- Serving - Serve this crispy Chicken Parmesan also called Chicken Parmigiana over pasta or with sides like roasted green beans, or roasted broccoli for lunch and dinner
